They actually did a TON of work on that. If you check out the Making of Zootopia video (Should be on Youtube), you'll see a couple of what looked like at least 95% finished animated scenes from the original plot. Apparently, ALOT of it was done, so they scrapped quite a bit.

Really a shame. I like the current Zootopia, but the original story had some real heart wrenching scenes in it.

That concept scene of the bearmitsfa or whtever had me in tears. As soon as Nick spoke it hit me so hard. i'm glad they didnt stick with the collar concept. that was way to dark. Poor little bear.

There is something infinitely off-putting about Judy's face in the lower left of page one every time I look at it. Not creepy, not unsettling, not even poorly drawn. Just... wrong.

This jacked combo of the bald-esk profile, the lidded eyes, and that... mouth. I have an irrational and uncontrollable urge to punch it out of my sight every update.

That just me? The work as a whole is pretty well done, which makes this impulse extra unfortunate.

So once again we have someone who has attempted to write something dark into the Zootopia universe. Except this time they go so far it doesn't even make sense.

So let me get this straight. In some conceptual drawings, the predators in Zootopia all were going to be forced to wear zap collars to prevent them from eating the prey animals. Except in THIS lovely little gem of a story, the predators aren't allowed to feel any kind of intense emotion AT ALL, not even sexual arousal or love for another person. So they're not allowed basically being restrained to the point of not being allowed to really be people... just meatsacks that stagger around doing work for the prey animals. How would this equate to a 'society for all animals' when the only ones profiting are the prey animals, while the predators are basically being treated like slaves?

Good Gods I'm glad this 'original concept' never made it to theatres. I do believe I would completely lose faith in the small bit of humanity I still have some slight bit of faith in. As it is, the sheer number of people here who seem to like this kind of thing is more than a little frightening.

@DracosBlackwing Did you watch the short about the kid bear getting his collar? He got zapped because he was happy and overly excited. The original colar's concept can't make any difference between fear, happiness, joy, love or hunger for prey. The collar WILL zap you if you go too far from a "neutral" way of mind.

I count myself as one of those people who actually would have wanted to see the original concept of the movie. I totally understand why they went with the more jolly approach, as it is more child friendly and nets them most likely more profits.

But not all stories have to be happy and jolly. Some of us find darker and more grim stories to have more fulfillment when they are resolved than stories that do not have same level of 'real' hardship within them. Also there is some 'beauty' in stories that have cathartic ending, like The Horseman. But I feel main thing is just to get to feel strong emotions, even if that is sadness.

One of the reasons I personally like these types of stories I do not know but I feel that for example Animals of Farthing Wood being one of my favourite cartoons from my youth might have something to do with it.

@Lamos: The biggest thing is Lamos, is that when people go to the movies, they want to be entertained and for the good guys to win. If they wanted dark stories, then all they have to do is turn on the news. Plenty of dark crap going on in just the last few weeks.

@kckitsune: Unfortunately, some of the most well written stuff on the planet IS DARK. It has to be. Darkness exists, bad guys win. There's no point in mindless escapism. A good story gives you a lesson about the world. Hell, Harry Potter is a story about DEATH and how people deal with it, some try and avoid it, some grieve, some become angry, but it gets everyone in the end. HARRY POTTER, the books about a little English lad going to magic school probably did a better job of teaching kids about people passing away than anything in recent years. And it did this within the confines of a "The good guys win" plotline.

So, a story doesn't have to be nothing but sunshine, rainbows, and unicorn turds. A story, even for kids, doesn't need to fall mindlessly into the same cliches as everything else for the sake of "entertainment."

@Blakfayt: Dark is fine, but the "Tame" collars was, IMHO, dipping into Grimderp territory.

If they nixed the dark version because a friendlier version would make more money, why did they do so much work on the dark version to begin with? It's just as likely they couldn't get it working right. Lots of movies get gutted and re-built because they aren't working. It's easier in a way with animation because there are no physical plant or props to worry about.
