Chapter 8: Initially I had Braille, but I also had another version that used animated gifs that switched to English after a delay. The trouble is that Braille speakers don't really have time to read it when it changes.

By then, an angry mob was reporting my work on the forums under quality control, and demanding that my work be deleted instantly.

IIRC, around that time Batoto issued me a warning and blocked me from uploader status (which lets you upload instantly without any moderation review.) My original plan might have been to upload the static braille to be captured and resampled by the Chinese aggregator bots, and then to replace it with the animated gifs. But I was probably thinking about how Japanazi's watermarking ruined the viewer experience, which Taruby ranted about on multiple blog posts. I knew that most of the aggregator sites converted gifs to jpegs too.

So I released the gifs instead, and predictably Batoto was English after a short delay, while the aggregator sites stole the pure braille. But it didn't last long, because crazily enough, most of the Chinese aggregator sites must have a tool to go over the gifs again, and resample them manually so only the English layer would show as the jpeg. I say it must be manual, because it worked even though I remember using different ordering for frames on different gifs. My theory is that manga viewing is really profitable when you hire people to fix gifs cheaply in China in response to Japanazi gif watermarking.

(My regret is not putting an invisible loli doujin layer in the gifs instead, that would only show up on the Chinese aggregator sites.)

Btw, this is Grade 1 Braille because it's easy/safe to convert with online tools. I know avid Braille readers would prefer that I manually translate into Grade 2 (which is a shorthand), but I would have been more apt to make a mistake.

Can someone educate me on manga aggregator sites? I heard it was an issue for batoto, but is it THAT severe?

@werefox22 What do you need to know? All are basically the same, with Batoto being a bitch not because its platform but because its moderators. It's been discussed in other boards outside hentai. You can always follow baka updates and go to the tl websites, follow series on other sites like batoto, or being part of the sekrit club and download stuff from there.
Batoto had as one of its first objectives not allowing other people to upload translations, and uploading in the original released resolution (from translators). Somehow the moderation became terrible not because they didn't allow stuff, but because their selection and rules were obviously biased. I even remember they leaving some yaoi hentai, but deleting Sexless friends series, that has a level of sex about 0.

Tbh I never really got into Batoto even though I watched it grow from the beginning. The site is fine (if slow), but I don't like the culture of it. Too much meme image comment spam from summerfags, too many unusually stupid comments, too many wiki edit wars, too many borderline ecchi manga were banned because the owner wanted advertising money or appealed to standards of morality. And then there's the whole hypocrisy of claiming they're not as greedy as mangafox because the advertising money has gone to help scanlators - when actually they only mean the Korean scanlators who founded the site (other scanlators they share get nothing.)

You're wrong on one point though - users used to upload my work without telling me before I registered, and one who did that, (along with uploading thousands of chapters for countless groups) became a moderator. Their morality compass has been broken, shifty, and inconsistent from the get-go, while they marketed themselves as having far better ethics than ordinary file-sharers, which is why I've laughed at their policies so much, and the stooges who are enamored with them.
