"What is Nanka Kanojo?"

It's a boring FREE niconico webcomic where nothing interesting happened (at least until about chapter 12.) I translated it because I was sure no one else would do it、and it quickly morphed into a multilayered parody of the meta of the manga scanlation scene. I've let it sit without comment for 2 years, but I can now explain what I tried to accomplish, since I put in as much creative work as the artist.

"Where can I get the raws?"

I often was asked this, because Batoto's starting userbase were 14 year-olds who couldn't even google a free webcomic.

"What's your intent?"

Chapter 1: The raws were little more than crude sketches really, and didn't use typesetting which I thought made it look cooler That's why I decided to break convention and write by hand too. The translation was bad too, but no one looked up the Japanese and instead vocally complained that I didn't take the time to typeset it.

Chapter 2: was a poke at scanlators who change a character's voice so much they practically rewrite the characters in a manga. Strangely, making them speak in old fashioned English improved the storytelling. I have told the author that anachronistic Holo speech would have made it better in Japanese too. But the Batoto reaction was to complain that I had butchered the original manga, and demand a retranslation.

At first I continued because I wanted to test if anyone would do a fresh translation of any chapter of "Nankano," but I was the only one who ever seriously translated them.

This is glorious, especially the second chapter.
