i believe tanooki are traditionally pranksters and like to impersonate others.
most likely her being oni is relevant because it sets up their world as one where mystical creatures exist

Well, from what I gather, the basic idea of this story is that it is a non-human that gets fucked by a non-human that she believed was a human.
basically him being a Tanuki was just meant as a plot twist. Also, as mentioned at the end, since they both are basically nature spirits,
in a sense they could be considered as animals. So them feeling love, was basically just them being in mating season.

I do agree with you. It was very cute so I wish there were several sequels to this one.
