My only problem with Toguchi Masaya stuff are the guys. The problem with writing "mother" or "mom" is that you lose context. "Kaasan/Kaa-san" means "mother", but so does the full "Okaa-san", "Okaa-sama", "Kaa-chan", et al, and whichever variation used can imply any number of different things about the speaker and his relationship to the one being spoken to (in this case, his mother). If a grown man is referring to his mother as "Kaa-chan", odds are he's very close to her (or maybe he's just a bit childish). Likewise, if he calls her "Okaa-sama", the high degree of formality could imply distance between the two (or that we're dealing with a story set in the distant past). Even the small difference between using "Okaa-san" versus the slightly more informal "Kaa-san" can mean something. Thus is the nature of Japanese honorifics, and why dropping or changing them is one the fastest ways to damage an otherwise good translation.

As a general rule of thumb, if it has an honorifical suffix (-san, -chan, -sama, -kun, etc.) attached to it and/or it's being used to directly refer to someone as you would with a name, don't translate it. I've seen many competent translators go against this policy, particularly with "Okaa-san" and its variations, and it always bothers me. Kudos to Fated Circle for being a bit more faithful.

I do have to hope, though, that given the site we're on and the content being discussed, a glossary wouldn't be needed for something as simple as "Kaasan", just as it doesn't seem to be needed for similarly used words such as "Nee-chan", "Onii-san", or "Sempai".
