@Miku miku miku: When an image with tonal shading is shrunk, artifacts show up in the shading. It's like looking at a huge fence or checkers from far away, patterns appear and disappear as you move closer or further. In reality, it's just an optical illusion, but the picture captures that and once shrunken... cannot be restored to its normal size. :
