Lauren Faust stated that after Spike hatched, Princess Celestia herself took care of him until he was older, at which point she gave him the job as assistant at the library to Twilight. This makes Celestia his "adopted mother" and while he respects her in public, he also views her as his mother.

This comic follows that backstory.
