Of course here's an issue with this: what are Shinto gods doing participating in a ritual that involves shedding blood and eating human flesh? Seems kinda blasphemous since, iirc, things like blood are impure in Shinto.

It's a painful sort of calculus to make, but there you go. You are correct, in that Shinto holds that blood is impure in the extreme, along with death, and that the divine is lessened by their presence. Historically, Shinto priests refused to even perform funerals, so great was their distaste for the dead; Buddhist priests took over that role for them. It's disingenuous that a human can become divine through an act of unwilling blood sacrifice and cannibalism in the mythology of Shinto, to say nothing of Sanae's whiplash of a motive, but that's another matter entirely.

I usually like this artist, I really do, but this one just felt grimdark for the sake of it, with no thought really put into it.
