oi you idiots complaining about the flashback, he just put in the 3rd ever in irl character drawn in traditional katou jun style and not as a faceless/generic side character! There are 3 characters in the game THINK ABOUT IT. If they are introducing her now in a flashback then it's very likely she is to come up in the next chapter or two of the present time. Besides, leaving people on a cliffhanger is a highly effective way to keep people coming back for more, any writer knows that. Japanese writers just make more use of it by extending the time between the resume allowing the author time to write up the rest of the story while the audience is still begging to see the resolution. Side stories are effectively solely for appeasing fans of the story from forgetting the series. If you don't give them anything at all then people will forget about it and move on with their lives. Also remember this is an artist who sells this stuff, he has to produce content to sell while all of you here get it for free.

Still this is flashback with key story elements, not a filler. Filler is throw away story that has no real meaning to the main plot and is often considered non-canon.

I remember hearing that this chapter, and then the next, were initially delayed due to health issues, but obviously there was also some kind of falling out with the publisher as well, since the new stuff is self-published. The author's note for chapter 12 says the story should be back to the "present" halfway through chapter 13, or with chapter 14 at the latest.
