Oddly enough my only real problem with it is the line "Did you hear about what happened to Rockafeller last night?". How could she have not heard about someone's death, when they're all on a ship together?

My original intention was that his lungs simply filled with sea water and he drowned in his sleep. It was stated in the early forms of the comic, but I ended up cutting out a lot of exposition because a bunch of the comic is already exposition. Too much detail bogs down the flow of the comic.

You bring up a good point. I tried to write their dialog in a way that seemed natural. Sometimes you know someone knows, yet you ask anyway just to bring up the general topic of conversation. In this case everyone on the ship would be shocked and dazed, and Campbell would just be bringing it up to make double sure. Naturally, I could have worded the dialog more clearly since it IS a comic and clarity is #1.
