First Two pic sets is a cosplay of Jiuer from Mo Yan's novel Red Sorhgram. Last set, in white robe and red underwear, is Shangguan Lushi from Mo Yan's Big Breasts and Wide Hips. The model's name is Su Zi Ling. 苏梓玲 in Chinese characters. She is a Hui Chinese (Muslim Chinese) and is a singer, dancer, glamour model, and very occasional cosplayer. She has no other cosplays that I know of, but other pictures of her in skimpy clothing can be found.

We should value ALL kinds of cosplay, not just the kind with purple wigs and plastic weapons. As far as I am concerned, there is real art here because she is playing something that is a much higher art than any of that: literature. Looking at this always takes me back to many beautiful scenes from that novel (written by a Nobel Prize winner BTW), that has an amazing character with more depth than Tifa Lockhart or Yoko whatever her name is I carry a big ass gun.

If that is not cosplay, then what is?!

I am not Chinese, I merely speak it and write it and am trying to bring what I felt was a legitimate cosplay to the site that members would not have gotten otherwise. There are hundreds of other pictures of Su Zi Ling (hell of a lot better pictures too) that I could have added to this, but I didn't because she was not cosplaying anything.

Some other reasons why I think the two petitions to expunge the Suu Zi-Ling cosplay posting are unjustified.

I like to think this site does more than just give users an outlet to post dirty images. It is a source of cultural and counter-cultural artifacts from Asia. That is not all it is, of course. It is a place where westerners have access to these cultural artifacts, when they might otherwise not.

I think the Suu Zi-Ling cosplay fits right into purpose. It is a cultural artifact based on a Chinese writer's, Mo Yan, novel.

Suu Zi-Ling does not often cosplay, she is a singer and glamour model. When she does cosplay, she only does characters from Mo Yan's novels. She has stated that she does this because she is a fan of Mo Yan. She thinks his work is significant, and that by cosplaying, she is also producing significant work. That just also happens to be sexy.

Is her fandom of Mo Yan not in the spirit of doujin (tongren) 同人 that is so prevalent in Asia and seen in the numerous cosplays of animated works? Is she not using cosplay as an expression of her fandom, her doujin spirit, so to speak?

Is that not what this website is all about?

In a round about way, I have found cosplay of non-anime, non-video game, and non-comic origin. There are cosplay of characters from Dynasty Warriors posted here. Dynasty Warriors is a video game based off the Chinese novel, Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

All those characters are not only characters from a video game, but also characters from a novel, and indeed true history.

I mention this only to prove the point that other Asian cultural artifacts besides video games, anime, and comics have made their way onto this site in the form of cosplays. There would be no babes in Dynasty Warriors if there weren't first babes in Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

I hope you agree with me and somehow protect the gallery from any more petitions to expunge. Perhaps the best solution is to include cosplays of movies and works of literature (comics are already works of pop-literature anyway) into the posting guidelines for cosplays.

Making this change will not lead to a flood of poor material, as cosplay from literature are rare beyond rare. And as the four-star rating on the Suu Zi-Ling gallery proves, cosplay of this type are well received by users.
