Thoroughbreds are rarely breed by that method anymore. They are too expensive and the risk of injury too high for two flighty horses to be that close to each other.

Thoroughbreds are breed nowadays by artificial insemination. Less risk for the mare that way and the added advantage for for stallion's owner is that one collection of semen can be diluted and use to inseminate several mares thereby increasing stud fees.
