@Sushilicious, it was suggested by the translator Masamune that the two versions be done in this matter. in the original, the men are speaking the equivalent of broken Japanese. The engrish version is an attempt to convey the brokenness of their speech patterns in Japanese.

on page 06 the two guys start talking. the author puts it in perfect Japanese, with a note that reads (In English). So while he put their broken English / poor Japanese in Engrish, he decided to put the perfect English in perfect Japanese. Kyoko, however, doesn't understand any of it. So the question became: "how do we show that they're fluently speaking a different language and convey the lack of understanding?" Well. I could have put it in Spanish or Italian or something, but I think keeping just that one box in Japanese might also do it. Here it's just in English with a sign that says it's in English.
